Stop negative thinking so that you can live the life of your choosing. Negative thoughts stop you having confidence in yourself and rob you of the willingness to accomplish what you enjoy. You find yourself endlessly fortifying the reasons why you will fail in your endeavours and, of course, this type of thinking produces self fulfilling prophesies.
Not only does negative thinking rob you of your personal power to act, it also impinges on your social interaction with others since your focus is always fixed in your own negativity. You end up feeling isolated and marginalised from the rest of society.
So how do you stop negative thinking? You will know how difficult it is to stop any kind of thoughts coming into your head and negative ones seem to be particularly difficult to shift.
To stop negative thinking is not a trivial task and you should not expect instant and magical results. However, you should also have faith that it can be done.
One of the latest and, ironically the oldest ways of overcoming negative thinking leading to anxiety and depression is 'mindfulness'. The practice goes back 2,500 years and is still an integral part of Buddhist practice. It is also being re discovered by Western psychologists as a highly effective cure for depression and negativity, especially when combined with cognitive therapy.
The main idea is to keep on pulling your mind back into the present each time it drifts off on a worrying pathway of negativity. One of the ways of achieving a mindful mindset is by meditating on the breath for around 10 minutes a day. You can feel the breath in your nostrils, in your chest and in the rise and fall of your abdomen.
Choose which area you wish to focus on and bring your whole mind to this area throughout your meditation period. If it is the abdomen, then note how it rises and falls with each in breath and out breath. Focus on how the breath feels in this area. When your mind wonders off as it will; bring it back to the abdomen.
By practicing this meditation, you are getting used to focusing your attention on one single thing. In your daily life, whenever your mind wonders into negative areas or otherwise, focuses on the part of the body you have chosen and feel the breath in that area. This will bring you back to your body and back to the present moment.
Keep this practice up every day for around eight weeks. During this period, you should definitely feel yourself becoming more relaxed and positive.
